The Best Floor Lamps, According to Interior Designers

Usually cast in corners or shoved between sectionals and chairs, a floor lamp is one of those easily overlooked pieces that shouldn't be — it's practically a stand-alone piece of furniture, and choosing the right one can change a room's décor scheme. Do you go decorative or trendy? Or should you focus on task and function? To find out, we reached out to interior designers and other design-adjacent folks who we think have exceptional taste to get their recommendations. Below are 32 floor lamps for every budget, from surprisingly expensive-looking ones under $100, to splurge-worthy lamps that definitely steal the spotlight.

Azalea 65

According to home decorator Carrie Carrollo, who told us she's been doing a lot of shopping for floor lamps lately, "The one consistent design element I've been gravitating toward is orbs," which she says "feel timeless, super modern, and very much vintage at the same time — it really depends on the context." She recommends this floor lamp with an orb light for its "minimal but definitely stylish" look, adding that it would work well in "tons of different interiors." The lamp has a very small footprint and is lightweight and portable, making it a great option for small-space living.

Project 62 Valencia Floor Lamp

Carrollo has also been noticing mushroom lamps everywhere on Instagram right now, though they're mostly vintage. If you're curious about that trend, consider this nonvintage lamp, which she likes because it "borrows part of that style (in the shape of the lampshade) but with a bit of a new construction." She adds: "The brass tone is so in demand right now, too, so at $65, it seems like a great choice — especially for someone in their first apartment." The metal shade also happens to be adjustable.

Versanora Arquer Arc Floor Lamp

If you're tired of what Carrollo calls the millennial-approved "all gold- (or brass-) toned everything" that she, too, has gotten weary of, she suggests trying chrome. "This lamp feels like a nice way to potentially experiment with the tone," she says. It also marries two of the shapes she mentions above, with a shade that is both orblike and mushroom-reminiscent.

YPPERLIG LED Floor Lamp

Here's a lamp that will provide light without stealing the show, thanks to its slim profile. It comes recommended by Stacy Harwood, a senior designer at online interior-design service Havenly, who likes its "sleek design" and calls it "super versatile," meaning it pairs well with any décor style. Designed by Strategist-favorite Hay for Ikea, it also has a swiveling base and head, and full dimmer capability for just $60.

DELAKTIG LED Floor Lamp

Another Ikea lamp, this one comes to us by way of interior designer Tiffany Thompson of Duett Interiors, who likes that it's simple and adjustable. Designed by Tom Dixon for Ikea, it has a curving neck and works great as a task or reading lamp.

Orren Ellis Bricelyn 62

For a column-style lamp, consider this one that interior designer Jenny Norris recommends. "The lines on this no-frills floor lamp are statuesque and clean, and can be a mature addition to your space," she says. Its frame is made of blackened bronze and topped by an understated linen shade, a design that gives the lamp both an industrial and traditional feel.

MAJORNA Floor Lamp With LED Bulb, 55

For an affordable (and rather unique) floor lamp, you could try this standing paper lantern, which "brings an airiness and awesome texture" to a room, according to Shannon Retseck, the owner of Cuttalossa, a home-goods and textile company, and Cuttalossa & Co., a retail space in Philadelphia. She particularly likes that the lamp is perforated, which allows it to emit diffused light. The $35 price tag feels like a major steal.

Project 62 Delavan Tripod Floor Lamp

According to Carrollo, the tripod shape is "classic and easy to style, but still sleek." Even though this has a bigger footprint than a standard one-legged lamp, she says it can be used in a variety of spaces. "What I love most about this lamp is how versatile it is," she says. "This particular version comes in black and Lucite with the tiniest gold details, so you can pick the one that best fits your décor style and interior." While the Lucite version is currently unavailable, the black one, which has metal legs, would add a bold touch to a room.

Poly & Bark Celeste Tripod Floor Lamp

Thompson agrees with Carrollo that tripod lamps go with almost any décor style. She recommends this elegant-looking one from Poly & Bark that has wooden legs and a white fabric shade, especially for those who prefer a more subdued look. It's available in a walnut base or a pale, natural color.

Allsop Luna Lamp

For a different kind of ambient light, two of our designers, Thompson and Retseck, suggest trying round floor lamps, like this one recommended by Thompson. "This is a nontraditional version of a floor lamp," she says. "I love it directly on the floor or propped up on a stack of books." It casts a soft glow and comes with 16 LED color options.

IKEA PS 2017 Floor Lamp With LED Bulb, White

This round steel floor lamp recommended by Retseck is a bit more industrial. She suggests using it to "illuminate a wall, a painting or a large house plant," adding that it would "make the space feel more elevated and cozy."

Rivet Modern Floor Lamp

Alessandra Wood, the VP of style at online interior design service Modsy, likes this floor lamp for its classic shape that she says lends itself to minimalist or mid-century-leaning spaces. It has a brass base and a pole accented with dark wood, elements that Wood says "add a touch of warmth to any space without becoming the center of attention."

Regency Hill Jenson Aged Brass Pharmacy Floor Lamp

"I love a good pharmacy lamp," says Wood, who adds that because of its classic look, this will always be in style. "This has the perfect blend of vintage and industrial charm, and the aged brass introduces an upscale feeling of warmth to any rustic space." It's available in other finishes, including nickel and bronze.

CB2 Task Matte White Floor Lamp

Here's another streamlined task lamp that comes recommended by interior designer Elizabeth Damrich. The slightly angled iron frame is powder-coated in a white matte and has an adjustable shade that can be tilted to illuminate whatever you please. And the base has a diameter of just over a foot, making the lamp ideal for nooks and small spaces. "I love that this provides the right amount of light next to a cozy chair," Damrich says.

Daylight24 Arc LED Floor Lamp, Silver

For a so-modern-it-verges-on-futuristic arc lamp, consider this space-age-y one that Thompson pointed us to. The curving neck itself is actually the light — no shade or head is attached at the end. "Think of this like a modern reading light, where you have the light coming directly overhead but it's still super dramatic and sculptural by itself," she says.

Versanora Fascino Tripod Floor Lamp, White, 63

This tripod lamp will definitely steal the show wherever it is placed. Thompson loves that it's inspired by a photographer's lamp, calling it "unique and industrial but also extremely functional, as the shade can be adjusted to direct the light at different spots in your home." It may be more expensive, but with this and a nice couch and a good rug, you really wouldn't need much more in the way of living-room décor. A note that the image shows two lamps, but they are sold separately and the price shown is for one.

Chevington Column Floor Lamp

Made of corrugated parchment (think cardboard chic), this column paper lamp channels the spirit (and look) of Isamu Noguchi's Akari light sculptures (more on those below), according to Jenny Kaplan, the owner of design firm an Aesthetic Pursuit and a co-owner of Pieces Home. She told us this makes a worthy dupe if one of the Japanese designer's actual paper lamps are out of your budget, adding that "a pair of these clustered together would create an interesting sculptural moment."

Artemide Dioscuri Table Lamp

An elevated version of the round Luna floor lamp above, this glowing orb is made of hand-blown glass and comes in mini, small, medium, and large sizes, making it ideal to use solo or in combination with a few sizes. Retseck recommends it, calling the lamp "a whole mood." She told us that "well-placed glowing globes bring a serene diffused light. Cluster a few different sizes to break up all the straight lines of your space." The lamps, which can be used on the floor or a table, also appear to "float," thanks to a hidden metal base.

CB2 Aristocrat 3 Globe Floor Lamp

Speaking of globes, this snazzy lamp features three of them and an enticing wood base with a lacquered veneer. "This has such a high-end, cool vibe, like something you'd see in a Parisian apartment," says Wood. "It definitely looks more expensive than it is, and will act like a sculptural piece of art in your space."

Ashton Tall Floor Lamp

For a similar — but more mellow look — consider this two-bulb lamp from Anthropologie that Hardwood calls "a statement piece with a striking design." It has a slim matte-black post and two smoked glass shades that she says "provide soft, subtle mood lighting." Harwood adds: "It would work well with modern, minimal, or glam design aesthetics."

EQ3 Oxford Dunce Floor Lamp

"This floor lamp is one of my favorites, mainly because of the marble base, but also because it's unique and it doesn't take up a ton of space," says Thompson. It comes from Canadian-based brand EQ3 and doesn't immediately look like lighting because of its matte-anodized-aluminum shade that emits a vertical shaft of light. "If you live in a smaller apartment, or you're looking for a light fixture to go in a corner space, this is a great option while still being a conversation piece," says Thompson.

CB2 Big Dipper Arc Brass Floor Lamp

This arc lamp recommended by Harwood has a more traditional design of simple metal base and cotton shade, making it especially versatile. "With an extending arch that's over six feet high," Harwood says it is a practical option for both small and large rooms. She adds that it comes with full dimmer capacity and that you can get it in two finishes (brass and nickel).

Pottery Barn Morton Floor Lamp

Harwood also loves this shaded lamp that she calls "simple," with a "versatile design that pairs well with coastal, Cali-cool, and transitional styles." We would agree. The pale rubberwood base and textured linen shade feel so relaxing and make it easy to imagine this lamp in the living room of our (theoretical) summer cottage.

CB2 Raw Marble Floor Lamp

According to Harwood, this is a "raw" take on your standard shaded lamp, thanks to its rough-cut marble base that she says is "super trendy" and "makes a statement." A slim nickel post and white cotton shade balance the natural base.

CB2 Delano Black Leather Floor Lamp

For another lamp that pairs simple shade with funkier-looking base, consider the Delano, which Norris likes for its "black steel and leather rope details" that she says "help elevate the standard drum shade." The lamp's designer, Brett Beldock, was apparently inspired by French Art Deco modernist leather furniture when she created it, according to the product description.

Isobel Floor Lamp

"An '80s nod with a muted, ancient feel" is how Retseck describes this unusual lamp. The twisting resin neck and woven drum shade are muted enough in color that the lighting won't overwhelm a room, she says, adding that this would be "such a great way to add visual interest to a space lacking charm."

Isamu Noguchi Floor Lamp Model UF3-Q

If you have the budget to buy a lamp and a piece of art, you could always spring for one of Noguchi's actual lamps, which are a designer, architect, and Strategist favorite. They're made of handmade washi paper with bamboo ribbing and are supported by a metal frame. Bay Area designer Lauren Geremia keeps this "classic but never tired" Noguchi paper lamp in her own bedroom. "The quality of light through iconic Noguchi lamps is so soft on the eyes," she says. The black dots add a touch of the graphic to an otherwise minimalist design.

Bower LED Floor Lamp

Speaking of Art Deco, interior designer Lisa Gilmore is another fan of that style, which is why she likes this sculptural LED lamp with glass globes that she calls "sleek." Gilmore adds, "When it comes to floor lamps, I don't like it when they are super bulky or take up too much footprint." Neither bulky nor space-hogging, this lamp would look "great in a corner or next to a piece of furniture," she says.

Chip on Board Technology Floor Lamp

"One way I love to add color in design is through lighting," says Gilmore. "This simple floor lamp is certainly a color pop without being too overwhelming." It's certainly minimal, with its slim monochrome body, and can be purchased in colors beyond orange, including navy, bronze, and gray. And while the circular lamp head may be small, it features "wide area light emitters," according to the product description, and touch dimming controls.

Muuto Leaf LED Floor Lamp

Another minimalist lamp, the Leaf from Scandinavian design studio Muuto comes recommended by Clémence Polès, the creative director and founder of online magazine Passerbuys. "I recently discovered Muuto and have been fawning over their designs," she says. "The Leaf floor lamp is beautiful — it's really elegant, thin, and doesn't take up much space." Slightly more sculptural than the Chip on Board lamp above, this "feels like it could be a part of an Alexander Calder piece," according to Polès. The shade, which is shaped like a leaf, can be angled in the direction you desire.

Restoration Hardware Slimline Task Floor Lamp

This super-streamlined pharmacy lamp counts a fan in Norris, who calls it "sexy, minimal, and discreet." She adds, "It fits comfortably right over a sofa arm, making it a perfect reading light," as its slim lamp head is adjustable and can move about 30 degrees side to side. The steel lamp comes with a dimmer switch on the cord and is also compatible with a wall dimmer.

Dorrette Floor Lamp

Gilmore told us she can't resist this lamp, calling it, simply, "everything." Another Art Deco–inspired lighting option, she says that "with the fluted shade and the tassels, it's absolutely gorgeous, and the added table makes it functional, too." The lamp has a steel and brass base and a pale-gray, hard-backed cotton shade that balances its flashy silhouette.
